Synopsis
The author states that some of her family history is such an ‘enigma’ that she decided to do some research. The result, this history, is an effort to ‘straighten out the mysteries’ with facts as well as suppositions. Different scenarios are proposed. The narrative begins with William Wilkes and Elizabeth Haines in Tewkesbury, England, in 1846. Connected family, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, came to America. Some spent time in St. Charles, Idaho, and some ended up in Star Valley, Wyoming. The life of Charles Wilkes, son of Elizabeth Crook Panting and William Wilkes, is covered in more detail. In time, he went to Star Valley and homesteaded in Smoot about 1894. Later he and his family moved to Bedford. *Research details are provided in the narrative.
